The Healer In The Modern World. Lesson Twelve: One Dozen
If you've been with me from the beginning this makes a dozen lessons in healing, self-healing and offering healing to others. Thanks for being along for the ride.
Now we look at the modern world and ask ourselves this difficult question: "With so many thoroughly awful things happening out there, from toxins to war to famine to poverty and beyond, how can I/we possibly do any good?" This is the healer's dilemma. It seems to be a hornet's nest of fear, doubt, worry and self-devaluation. Here's a sane way through the lie that you're not good enough, talented enough, worthy enough, deserving enough or loving enough to make a difference...read on...
Now, let me explain how this applies to the healer's dilemma...
We feel that the world is too big. Problems are too big. We're too small. Our efforts are too small...so...why bother.
But there is something in us that pushes us to reach out and help others with the words, skills, talents and kindnesses we can offer...in the hope that it will make a difference. Many healer-types suffer or have suffered from the idea that we're not deserving or worthy enough to engage the problems, the challenges, the clients, the solutions or the way out. It's just a lie of the mind.
If not us, then who? If not you, then who? Why are you here facing these challenges if they were not designed to be tackled by you? Is your neighbor or your co-worker the one who is supposed to be tackling your challenges? No. It's you. It's always been you.
When I FINALLY noticed the OBVIOUS evidence that I was supposed to do healing work with people, dogs & other animals everything changed. Mostly, my doubt lifted. It took years and tons of evidence but I finally noticed that this (what I do now) is THE THING I'M SUPPOSED TO BE DOING BECAUSE I'M GOOD AT IT AND AM LOVING DOING IT. Such a huge relief.
So the question is: WHAT IS IT YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY GOOD AT, LOVE & ENJOY DOING THAT YOU'RE NOT FULLY DOING YET? It's the obvious things. This is not subtle. When it comes to healing work or learning to become a healer the question is even more pointed: WHAT IS IN YOU THAT LIFTS OTHERS UP--AND COULD YOU STOP RESISTING IT? Could you drop your resistance and doubt and fear and worry about it? Do you bake healing cookies that folks go crazy for? Do you massage feet like the next superstar? Do you write healing stories or record healing music?
Could you step fully into your gifts & talents? Could you BE THE ONE WHO bakes cookies, rubs feet, write stories and record that music that you do? Could you be it? Could you own it? Could you allow yourself to let go of wanting/needing/playing at being someone else's specialty...and be yours? I can tell you from very personal experience of having done 1,000 things that were not me, that doing "me" feels exactly like "home", like "happy" and being "on purpose". It also doesn't feel like work. Such a relief.
If you've met and taught the wide variety of healers, healers-to-be and healers-in-training that I have you can easily recognize the ONE characteristic that tells the most. It's authenticity; being you while you're learning to heal. I believe that the famous iconic metaphysical quote, "I am that I am" is actually about this very subject.
It's hard when you're young to be who you are because you're out experimenting and trying on hats. It's wonderful to try on hats. Later on, nothing feels more secure, powerful and honest than being who you actually are with all your gifts & talents turned on. The healer is you, showing up as yourself, learning to help.
Can you embrace your gifts & talents?
